Vice President Yang Bin highly praised Mr. Fang’s contribution to the development of Tsinghua’s social sciences and humanities, and particularly to the establishment of the think tank of national strategy. Professor Yan Xuetong, Dean of the Institute of Modern International Relations, Tsinghua University, Secretary-General of the World Peace Forum, and Mr. Fang’s ex-supervisor, gave the audience a brief introduction about why and how Mr. Fang set up Tianda Scholarship, donated Tianda Square and jointly established National Strategy Institute with Tsinghua University, and thanked Mr. Fang for his great support in founding and developing the World Peace Forum.

In his speech during the ceremony, Mr. Fang Wenquan expressed his sincere and deep gratitude to Tsinghua University. He said that Tsinghua’s decision to name the donated site “Tianda Square” had shown the university’s spiritual encouragement of a donator and alumnus.

He stressed that the reason to name the site “Tianda Square” is threefold. Firstly, it was owing to his entrepreneurial philosophy. Tianda stands for growing and progressing one step at a time until becoming exceptionally powerful, which emphasises that, to build a business, one needs to start small, down to earth and not impetuous, achieve goals through hard work and great effort, with both the process and result being good and wonderful.

Secondly, it was owing to his entrepreneurial feelings. He started his business in the early 1990s, at the primary stage of reform and opening up. During the development of more than 20 years, he truly realized that, without reform and opening up, there would be no good policies and environment, no commercial success at present, and no such ceremony today; without reform and opening up, and without good policies and environment, over one billion Chinese people would never live such a happy life today, China would never enjoy such a high international status today, and the globe we live on would never have such an order today. “The heaven is great, the earth is great, but they can't compare with the greatness of what the Party has done for the people.” Mr. Fang said: “The remark stands like a monument in my heart, and I can sense the feelings inside myself.”

Thirdly, it was owing to his good wishes to Tsinghua University. Mr. Fang promised that he would continue to provide funding for Tsinghua, building a platform based on Tianda Square, providing scholars and students at Tsinghua with a place to show their talents, a place to give performances, and a place to play great roles, and creating a positive and upward public square culture at Tsinghua, and Mr. Fang expressed his best wishes to the University: May centennial Tsinghua continue to grow on the firm ground, advance daily in culture, achieve first class success and maintain great prestige in the world!
